MEET MRS. MARY OWENS
PROFESSIONAL LIFE:
I earned my teaching credential at Point Loma College in San Diego, after using my Marketing degree from California State University, Sacramento for several years. I have also received a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. I have been an educator for over twenty-four years, working for the Clark and Washoe counties of Nevada teaching 2nd-6th grades, running after school tutoring, plus creating and teaching intersession programs. In an effort to continually learn more about my craft, I have attended the invitation only Southern Nevada Writing Project, earned English Language Learner and Gifted and Talented Education endorsements on my license, helped run STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) nights and have been a grade level chairman. Last school year, I earned the Practitioner and Explorer Badge designations from Washoe County School District's 21st Century Division. I am currently working in the Gifted and Talented Education Department as an Enrichment Specialist servicing several schools in the Reno area.
PERSONAL LIFE:
I am blessed to have three children and two grandsons. My oldest children live in Las Vegas. Devan is a wonderful mother to my two grandsons, and my oldest son, Jeremiah, is a middle school English teacher. (He actually teaches in the same middle school my husband went to many years ago.) My youngest son is a sophomore at Reno High School who loves playing baseball and football. As a family we enjoy traveling to new places, going to sporting events, and hiking with our dog, Buster. When I am not teaching or volunteering, I love to read, shop, make jewelry/crafts, and visit any beach !
FUN FACT:
Before moving to Reno we were living on the Big Island, Hawaii! One day I was barefoot on the beach, and the very next day we were driving to Reno in our first snowstorm ever!
